What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments and Product Reviews

When visitors leave comments on the site or review products in our shop, we collect the data shown in the comments or reviews form and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment or review, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment or review.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Other Data We Collect

We collect email addresses, purchase history (e.g., how much you spend with us and what you buy), contact form entries, quiz and survey form entries, and resumes and job applications submitted to us. We use this data to deliver services to you; to create content such as podcast episodes, blog articles, magazine articles, and training materials; and to develop new product offerings, such as new books and continuing education courses. If there’s anything else being collected, don’t worry. We don’t sell it, and we have no idea how to use it other than as is described in this paragraph.

Cookies

If you make a purchase or leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you make another purchase or leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who we share your data with

We value our relationship with you and consider it a personal trust. Therefore, our list and your data are not sold to anyone. We use a third party payment processor, www.lawpay.com, to process credit card and eCheck payments. Your financial data is not disclosed to or maintained by us. Please visit the LawPay website to learn what they do to protect your financial data. We also use plugins to gather data about your activities on our site. However, we disable the ability of the plugin developers to use your data for their purposes.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website, we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Additional information

How we protect your data

Our website hosting company, www.ionos.com, provides security features such as SSL certificate encryption to provide a secure connection, DDoS protection against attacks, and anti-virus scanner software that deactivates any files that breach the firewalls and blockers that are in place. In addition, we have plugins activated to block unverified comments and robotic form entries that could contain a virus. We use a third-party payment processor, www.lawpay.com, to process all payment transactions so that we never take possession of your financial data.

What data breach procedures we have in place

In the event of a data breach, we will immediately contact our website hosting company, www.ionos.com, to secure the breach. We also contract with a third party IT engineer who can (i) access the extent of any breach; (ii) assist us in notifying any subscribers whose personal identifying data, such as data included on a resume, has been compromised; and (iii) advise us on additional security measures that we can implement to prevent a future breach.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

We are a content creation and training company, not a technology company. We do not use algorithms to make decisions. Our decisions, such as whether to extend a payment plan, offer a discount off our published prices, or approve a request for a refund, exchange, or substitution, are made in accordance with our Finance Policies/Terms and Conditions which are updated from time to time. Exceptions (if any) to our published policies are made by humans in managerial roles at our company.
